These are arranged unions dressed up as romance, negotiated by chancellors and monarchs to cement alliances between Berlin, St. Petersburg, and the other courts of Europe, with the brides themselves treated as instruments of foreign policy rather than partners. The narrative follows several of these princesses in turn, from wedding to widowhood, showing how each balanced private longing against public duty inside the Winter Palace and the wider machinery of empire. It closes with the last Empress, whose German birth became a political liability as Russia and Germany drifted toward war, tying the whole line of brides to the monarchy's eventual collapse.
