Two American gunships, the Hamilton and the Scourge, went down in a sudden storm on Lake Ontario on August 8, 1813, taking more than 80 men with them during a War of 1812 battle for control of the Great Lakes. No navy inquest followed, and the wrecks have sat undisturbed and remarkably preserved in the lake's cold, dark water for close to two centuries. The Fletcher team joins archaeologists, scientists, and marine engineers on an expedition to send equipment into the hulls for the first time since the sinking, working from the only eyewitness account on record, dictated by sailor Ned Myers. Dive footage and underwater imaging reveal cannons, timbers, and personal effects still in place on the lakebed, while the investigators piece together what the ships' condition tells them about how fast they sank and why the death toll was so high.
