The Tobacco Conspiracy

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

In December 1953, the heads of America's largest tobacco companies met at New York's Plaza Hotel to plan a response to mounting evidence that their product caused cancer. The film traces the six-decade campaign that followed: funded research designed to manufacture doubt, lobbyists embedded in government, and advertising engineered to keep smokers hooked even as internal documents admitted the danger. Interviews with former industry insiders, scientists, and lawyers who fought the companies in court lay out how the same playbook used in Washington in the 1950s and 60s has been exported wholesale to Africa, where regulation is thin and markets are expanding fast. Archival footage of congressional hearings and old cigarette ads sits alongside present-day scenes from African markets and clinics, showing the strategy adapting to a new continent rather than disappearing. The film frames the story as an argument about where responsibility lies, with corporations that concealed what they knew or individuals who chose to smoke, and lets the industry's own paper trail answer the question.
