A landowner in rural England and a handful of metal detectorists have been pulling Roman objects out of the same field for years, with no formal excavation ever done on the site. This two-part series follows the archaeologists who finally get access, starting from a scatter of coins and pottery and working outward until the survey reveals a Roman town far larger than anyone expected buried under the farmland. Geophysical scanning and test trenches map streets, buildings, and refuse pits, turning a private collection of curiosities into a settlement with its own layout and history. The detectorists who first flagged the material return as guides to where the best finds came from, and the landowner watches decades of casual discovery turn into a proper dig. Narration by Louisa Gummer carries the story from isolated object to buried town, with the scale of the find only becoming clear once the survey equipment is on the ground.
