Fred Harrison, a land economist, builds a three-part argument tracing modern crises back to one cause: the privatization of rents that should belong to the public. Part one, Casino Capitalism, opens with Adam Smith's line branding rent-seekers "the Public Enemy," then walks through the 2008 banking collapse as a predictable outcome of a debt-fueled property system, with Harrison forecasting the next boom and bust. Part two, The Crucible of Terror, argues that Barack Obama's economic policies undercut his own stated goal of defeating terrorism, treating poverty and inequality as fuel for violence rather than side effects of it. Part three, The Temple of Doom, pushes the argument back five hundred years to Henry VIII's seizure of church lands, presented as the founding act that let private interests capture wealth meant for the commons, and forward to rising carbon emissions and coastal flooding as its modern consequence. Harrison narrates throughout, treating financial crisis, terrorism, and environmental damage as three symptoms of the same unaddressed root.
