Ted Haggard built New Life Church into a Colorado Springs megachurch with a reported thirty million followers worldwide, then lost all of it in 2006 when a male escort's allegations of paid sex and methamphetamine use became public and Haggard confessed to what he called "sexual immorality." Filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi, who had profiled him earlier in her HBO film Friends of God, tracks him down afterward and keeps the camera close as he and his family shuttle between rented houses and motel rooms, banished from the church and the state he had called home. Pelosi's interviews catch him selling insurance door to door, a long way from a pulpit that once reached tens of thousands, and he talks with surprising candor about the marriage, the ministry, and the reputation he is trying to piece back together. The film does not resolve whether Haggard is a cautionary tale or a man rebuilding in good faith. It just stays with him through the unglamorous work of trying to start over.
