The Truth about Depression

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Broadcaster Stephen Nolan sets out to strip away the stigma surrounding depression, sitting down with people who live with the illness day to day and pressing them on what it actually feels like rather than how it is usually described. He talks to psychiatrists and researchers about what is known and not known about the biology behind the condition, and challenges the common assumption that depression is simply sadness that has gone on too long. The people he interviews describe episodes, treatments, and relapses in their own words, and Nolan uses his own on-camera presence to ask the blunt questions a friend might ask rather than a clinician. The film moves between personal testimony and expert explanation, treating the two as equally necessary to understanding an illness that remains widely misunderstood. It is a plain, interview-driven account rather than a dramatized one, built around the voices of people who have been diagnosed and the scientists trying to explain why.
