Troy has been a myth for three thousand years, a story of Helen's face and a ten-year siege fought over her. This Horizon episode follows archaeologist Manfred Korfmann, who has excavated the site since 1988 and here speaks at length for the first time about what he has found: a city far larger than earlier digs suggested, elaborate defensive ditches and walls, and physical evidence of a violent destruction dating to roughly the period the Trojan War is supposed to have occurred. The film traces the wider evidence trail alongside him, from Hittite clay tablets that mention a kingdom called Wilusa, to a shipwreck loaded with Bronze Age treasure, to gold masks and bronze swords recovered from warrior graves. It climaxes in a tunnel Korfmann uncovered deep under the city, a discovery he believes bears on why Troy was really attacked. The picture that emerges argues for a real war behind the legend, driven less by romance than by trade routes and power.
