The Turbulent Life of Gaddafi's Son: Saif al-Islam Gaddafi
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, second son of the late Libyan dictator Muammar al-Gaddafi, spent years cultivating an image as a European-educated reformer before the 2011 revolution turned him into a prisoner of anti-Gaddafi militias, tried only by videolink. This DW documentary traces his path from a childhood inside a paranoid ruling clan through a playboy period abroad to his unexpected 2021 announcement that he would run for the Libyan presidency, despite convictions at home and an outstanding International Criminal Court case for crimes against humanity. Interviews with relatives and political actors describe a man rumors call a mystic hiding in the desert, and weigh whether his ambitions have any real chance in a country split between rival governments in the east and west and competing militias backed by outside states. The film was produced in 2023, before his killing by unidentified gunmen in Zintan, and treats his erratic career as a mirror of Libya's own fractured, unresolved state.
