A black umbrella, open on a sunny day, stands in the Zapruder film footage just feet from Kennedy's car seconds before the shots ring out. Errol Morris uses that single strange detail to walk through decades of assassination conspiracy theory, interviewing writer Josiah Thompson about how one man holding an umbrella became, for researchers combing the film frame by frame, evidence of a coordinated signal to shooters. The film then delivers its punchline: Louie Steven Witt, the umbrella's owner, eventually came forward and explained himself to a congressional committee, and the reason had nothing to do with weather or conspiracy. Morris uses the story as a compact lesson in how assassination research works, how a真实, verifiable detail can look like proof of a plot until someone simply asks the person involved. Archival Zapruder frames and Thompson's on-camera analysis carry the short's argument about the seduction of pattern-finding in the Kennedy case.
