In the small Japanese village of Nagoro, Ayano Tsukimi has spent years replacing her departing and dying neighbors with life-sized dolls made of cloth and stuffing. She sews their clothes, sets their faces, and places them in the fields, bus stops, and school desks the real residents once occupied, recreating a farmer bent over his crop or children lined up for a class photo. The film follows her at work and around the valley, letting the dolls sit in long, quiet shots that make the emptiness of the depopulated village visible. Interviews and observational footage explain how a town that once held hundreds of people now counts more dolls than living inhabitants. It is a small, specific portrait of rural Japan's demographic decline, told through one woman's private way of keeping a vanishing place company.
