The VICE Guide to North Korea

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

VICE correspondents document their attempt to get inside North Korea, a country that rarely grants Western journalists entry. The film follows the surreal process of negotiating visas with government minders, then the tightly choreographed tour that follows: empty highways, staged monuments to Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il, a subway ride that may or may not be for tourists only, and a hotel room the crew suspects is bugged. Handlers control nearly every frame, steering the cameras toward propaganda murals and away from anything unscripted, and the footage becomes as much a record of the control as of the country itself. Interviews are scarce and guarded, so the film leans on observation, catching small cracks in the performance, a guide's slip of irritation, a street that looks swept clean for visitors. It plays like a travelogue that keeps bumping into the limits of what it is allowed to show, which turns out to be the real story.
