The Virgin Daughters

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

In Colorado Springs, fathers and daughters attend purity balls, formal dances where girls as young as six pledge to remain virgins until marriage and fathers vow to protect that vow. Director Jane Treays follows several families inside the purity movement, including Randy and Lisa Wilson, who helped popularize the balls, and spends time with the daughters themselves as they explain, in their own words, why they made the pledge and what it costs them socially at school. The film sits in on the ceremonies, the rings and certificates exchanged between father and daughter, and the sermons that frame female virginity as a gift to a future husband. Treays also talks to girls who have broken their pledges and to critics who see the movement as controlling rather than protective. The camera stays close on the fathers, whose devotion is plainly sincere, without settling the question of what the ritual actually asks of the daughters.
