Wario is twelve and belongs to the Borana tribe of Ethiopia, where becoming a man means learning the trade of salt. The film follows him as he shadows his father into the crater the Borana call the mouth of the devil, a volcano where men descend to hack out salt by hand while risking rockfall and heat. From there the two travel to the singing wells, where laborers form a human chain thirty feet deep to haul water up by hand, timing their movements to call-and-response songs passed down through generations. With camels loaded with salt and water, father and son then set out on the salt route, a multi-day crossing of open desert that has defined Borana manhood for generations. Real footage inside the crater and at the wells carries the film, with minimal narration letting the labor and the singing speak for themselves. It is a portrait of an economy and a coming-of-age ritual built on the same brutal work.
