The Warrior Women of Asgarda

2013 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Katerina Tarnovska teaches preschool in Ukraine and holds a kickboxing world title, but her real project is Asgarda, a community she has built for young women in the Carpathian Mountains who train in martial arts, archery, and horseback riding. She believes the group descends from the Amazons, the warrior women of Greek legend, and the film follows her back to her home village and into the forest camps where she drills her students in combat and self-reliance. Interviews with Tarnovska and the young women in her circle lay out why they see the training as protection against a country they view as unsafe for women, alongside footage of the physical routines themselves, sparring, weapons drills, and long rides through the hills. The film treats the Amazon ancestry claim as Tarnovska's own belief rather than settled history, letting her make the case in her own words while the camera stays with the day-to-day discipline of building the group. It runs short and stays focused on one woman's project and the students following her.
