Off the Tuscan coast, the island of Gorgona holds Italy's only prison farm, home to around a hundred inmates serving out serious sentences while working the land instead of sitting in cells. The film goes inside a facility where guards carry no weapons, relying instead on a surveillance network and a strict system of privileges to keep order. By day the men tend vineyards, olive groves, and livestock; by night they return behind thick walls. Break the rules and there is no warning system, just a transfer back to the crowded, harsher prisons on the mainland, a threat that does more to enforce discipline than any guard could. The film observes daily routines, plantation labor, and the physical isolation that defines the island, using it as a case study in an experiment most prison systems never attempt: whether hard agricultural work and near-total seclusion can rehabilitate men that conventional confinement could not. It is a portrait of a curious middle ground between punishment and trust.
