At the end of the Korean War, twenty-one American prisoners of war refused repatriation and chose to stay in Communist China instead of going home, a decision that made front-page news and branded them traitors for decades. Filmmaker Shuibo Wang tracks down the surviving men, now old and mostly forgotten, and lets them explain what pulled them toward Mao's China: disillusionment with segregation and poverty back home, exhaustion with the war, and promises of a fairer society. Archival newsreels, propaganda footage, and Cold War press clips reconstruct the hysteria their choice triggered in the United States, while interviews trace what actually happened to them afterward, jobs, marriages, disappointments, and for some, eventual return to an America that never stopped viewing them with suspicion. The film treats the men neither as heroes nor dupes, letting their own contradictions and regrets carry the story. It is a small, specific footnote to the Korean War that opens into a larger question about loyalty, ideology, and what home means once you have renounced it.
