Third Eye Spies

During the Cold War, the CIA and the Stanford Research Institute funded a program to test whether people could see distant places using only their minds. This film tells that story through the scientists and psychics who ran it, including physicist Russell Targ and the program's star subject, artist Ingo Swann, who claimed he could describe hidden targets from thousands of miles away. Interviews and archival material trace how remote viewing moved from a fringe lab experiment into an official intelligence tool, reportedly used to track Soviet submarines and locate hostages. Declassified documents and firsthand accounts from former operatives lay out the program's methods and its results, while skeptics get room to argue that the whole enterprise was self-deception dressed up in scientific language. The film treats the CIA's own eventual embarrassment about funding psychic research as part of the story, not a punchline, and leaves the central question of whether any of it actually worked open for the viewer to weigh against the evidence presented.
