Tight Contact Structures and Torus Knots
Hyunki Min, from the University of Georgia, presents a research talk at the Joint IAS/PU Symplectic Geometry Seminar on classifying tight contact structures on surgeries along torus knots. Min frames the broader problem in contact topology, classifying contact structures on a given 3-manifold, noting that the unknot case (lens spaces) is the only one fully understood, while most other knots remain only partially solved or entirely open. The talk surveys the topological and algebraic tools developed to attack this problem and describes recent progress and strategy for the torus knot case, joint work with John Etnyre, Bulent Tosun, and Konstantinos Varvarezos. Delivered at Simonyi Hall for an audience of specialists, the hour-long seminar assumes familiarity with contact geometry and knot surgery, moving through definitions, known results, and open questions in the classification program.
