Till Death Do Us Part: Divorce Still Banned in the Philippines

2011 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

The Philippines and the Vatican are the only two places on earth where divorce remains illegal, and this film follows the people caught in that law. Interviews range from women trapped in abusive marriages with no legal way out, to Catholic clergy and lawmakers defending the ban as a moral bulwark for the family. Manila street scenes and church services set the backdrop for a debate that runs through the country's legislature, where bills to legalize divorce have stalled for years against the influence of the Catholic hierarchy. The film gives space to annulment as the only existing escape hatch, a process shown to be slow, expensive, and out of reach for most Filipinos who cannot afford lawyers or years of litigation. Advocates for reform argue the law punishes the poor while the wealthy find workarounds; opponents insist the ban preserves the sanctity of marriage. The film does not resolve the argument, leaving the viewer with the plain fact that separated couples here have no legal path to remarry.
