Australian Special Forces have operated in Afghanistan for over a decade, but until this film almost none of it had been shown on camera. Journalist Chris Masters, a four-time Walkley winner, spent three years securing access to the Special Air Service Regiment, the Commandos, and the Incident Response Regiment, embedding with Task Force 66 during rotation 16 of the Special Operations Task Group. Cameras follow soldiers on night raids into Taliban-held villages and on an undercover mission to destroy a multi-million dollar drug lab funding the insurgency. Wounded veterans speak on camera about the risks of fighting alongside Afghan allies who sometimes turn their weapons on coalition troops, and about whether a decade of fighting has actually moved the country toward local control. The crew is present on the tenth anniversary of September 11, the event that triggered the deployment in the first place. Masters calls it the first time news cameras followed Australian troops into direct combat, and the footage backs that claim up with firefights rather than briefings.
