Tracking Down Phone Scammers
Phone scammers cold-call pensioners, pose as police officers, and talk victims into handing over cash and valuables, sometimes with fatal consequences. This film follows Detective Chief Inspector Desiree Schelshorn as she works to catch the networks behind the calls, many run from call centers in Eastern Europe. In one operation, a pensioner realizes mid-call that he's being scammed, tips off police, and helps set a trap while officers position themselves nearby to make arrests. Original audio recordings of scam calls let viewers hear the manipulation tactics directly: the false urgency, the impersonated authority, the pressure to act before family or police can intervene. The film also sits with victims describing what it felt like to be deceived and what they lost. Rather than treating the scams as abstract crime statistics, it tracks the mechanics of a single investigation from surveillance to arrest, showing how difficult it is to reach the organizers when the callers and the money trail cross borders.
