Translating Healthcare Research into Healthcare Entrepreneurship
Suzanne Mitchell, part of MIT's Substance Use Disorders Ventures Program, lectures on how healthcare researchers can move findings out of the lab and into viable ventures. Delivered as a session within the Spring 2025 RES.SUD-01 course, the talk covers the practical steps of turning clinical and research insight into a startup concept aimed at substance use disorder treatment, including how to identify a problem worth solving, validate it with stakeholders, and frame it for investors or healthcare systems. Mitchell draws on her own background bridging medicine and entrepreneurship to walk through the gap between academic publication and real-world deployment, touching on regulatory hurdles, clinical partnerships, and the mindset shift researchers need to act as founders. Running 86 minutes, the lecture is aimed at clinicians and scientists considering whether their research could become a company, with substance use disorder care as the applied example throughout.
