Marcus Lee, an Australian accountant, moves to Dubai in 2006 to take a job with a real estate development firm, and his wife Julie joins him for what looks like a comfortable expatriate life. Three years later, while Julie is away on vacation, police pick Marcus up without explanation and hold him for nine months, the first two in solitary confinement, later shuffled between overcrowded prisons where he shares a bed with his cellmate and contracts pneumonia. Julie smuggles in medication to keep him alive. The film interviews the couple directly about the accusation behind it all: an Australian company, Sunland, pursuing a multi-million dollar property fraud case against Marcus that authorities take nearly five years to resolve. Released on $300,000 bail, he is placed under house arrest with both passports confiscated, financially wiped out and still unable to leave the country. Court hearings stall for weeks at a time and judges change mid-case. The Lees tell their own story on camera, describing a legal system where bounced checks and fraud charges land people in the same cells as serial killers.
