In the summer of 2018, tens of thousands of fans pack Vancouver's Rogers Arena for The International, the world championship of the video game Dota 2, with a prize pool built entirely from crowdfunded contributions by the game's own players. Valve's cameras follow multiple teams through the tournament, including North American squad Evil Geniuses and Chinese contenders, tracking practice sessions, draft strategy arguments, and the private tension between teammates who have played together for years. Interviews with players and coaches lay out how a single misplay or a bold last-minute strategy shift can decide a match worth millions of dollars, and the film spends real time on the toll of the schedule, the language barriers on international rosters, and what happens to a team's morale after a public loss. Courtside and backstage footage from Rogers Arena captures the scale of the event, arena chants and all, treating competitive gaming with the same weight a traditional sports documentary gives a world championship.
