The James Webb Space Telescope launched on Christmas morning 2021, the centerpiece of a $10 billion, thirty-year mission to see further back in time than any instrument before it. This film follows the scientists reading Webb's infrared images of the earliest galaxies, formations so old their light left them within a few hundred million years of the Big Bang. Interviews with astronomers lay out why some of what Webb found does not match expectations: galaxies appearing larger, brighter, and more structured earlier than the standard model of galaxy formation predicted. The footage moves between mission control, telescope engineering explanations, and the deep-field images themselves, letting researchers walk through what each smudge of light actually represents. Rather than treating Webb's data as a simple confirmation of existing theory, the film sits with the anomalies, asking what has to change in our understanding of how the first stars and galaxies assembled. It is a status report from the edge of current cosmology, not a settled account.
