In Hanoi's old quarter, families and shopkeepers live inside houses so narrow they earn the name tunnel houses: facades sometimes only a few meters wide, stretching back deep into the block and climbing up to five stories. The film follows residents through these structures, showing how a single building holds a storefront, a workshop, and a home stacked on top of each other, a layout that grew directly out of old tax rules that charged property owners by the width of their street frontage rather than depth. Cameras move through cramped stairwells, rooftop terraces used for drying laundry and growing plants, and street-level shops that spill goods onto the sidewalk, capturing how densely the old quarter is used from ground floor to roof. Architects and long-time residents describe how the form adapted over generations to fit more people and more commerce into the same footprint.
