Turn It Loose: The Story of Lilou

2011 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

In September 2007, sixteen of the world's top B-Boys converge on a disused power station in Soweto, South Africa, to battle for the Red Bull BC One world championship. The film follows French breakdancer Lilou through the tournament, using match footage, backstage moments, and interviews with competitors to show what a one-on-one breaking battle actually demands: split-second reads of an opponent, power moves executed on concrete, and judges deciding a winner in real time. Soweto itself becomes part of the story, its history sitting alongside a global dance culture that has traveled from New York block parties to South African townships. Rather than treating breaking as spectacle, the film stays close to Lilou's preparation and mindset, framing the championship as the culmination of years spent building a style distinctive enough to beat fifteen of the best dancers alive. The power station setting, half-industrial ruin and half-arena, gives the final rounds a stripped-down intensity.
