Dmytro Dokunov, known as Dok, spent the year before Russia's invasion building an eco-community, meditating, gardening, and making art. A mobilization notice forces him to choose between fighting and fleeing; he chooses to fight, and ends up in a paratrooper reconnaissance unit after four months of training that includes river crossings, machine-gun drills, and helicopter jumps. His phone camera stays on almost constantly, turning the film into a first-person diary of the war near Kherson, where his unit is ambushed and his closest friend, a Krishna devotee nicknamed Thor, is killed. Days later Dok leads his men into a battle known over radio as 'Position Zero,' fought right alongside enemy lines, with explosions, nights in the trenches, wounded men, and bodies to evacuate. The footage sets this violence against lakes full of cranes and fields of sunflowers, a landscape that keeps looking untouched while the men in it are not. Dok narrates as a self-described pacifist and vegetarian forced to reconcile who he was with what the front requires of him.
