Shaun Smith spent years as an enforcer for one of Liverpool's biggest crime families, a role that put him at the center of a war against a rival drug gang. He sprayed houses with machine guns, built homemade napalm to firebomb enemies, and helped bring a level of organized violence to British gang conflict that the country hadn't seen before. Five years in prison on firearms charges followed. This film picks him up afterward, working as a debt collector in Warrington, a town outside Liverpool, where his old reputation now does part of the job for him: people pay up because they know who's knocking. VICE follows him on the job and lets him talk through his past directly, without narration smoothing over the contradictions. The camera stays close on the mechanics of the transition itself, watching how the instincts and reputation built for violence get repurposed into something legal but still built on fear, and how thin that line turns out to be in practice.
