Elisabeth, 29, was studying Slavic Studies in Kyiv when Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022. She had no training as a war correspondent, but stayed on as a freelance journalist and now travels back into Ukraine regularly, even after moving home to Berlin, to report on the lives of ordinary people around the capital rather than combat itself. Vincent, 36, is a photographer who has covered crisis zones worldwide; two days after the invasion he was already photographing the wreckage of Russian strikes, and the film follows him documenting a medical battalion evacuating wounded soldiers from the front. Both describe the toll the work takes beyond the physical risk, the psychological weight of absorbing violence and destruction unfiltered, day after day. Reporters Without Borders figures cited in the film put the number of journalists killed covering the war at eleven. Shot on location in and around Kyiv, the film stays close to its two subjects, using their trips, cameras, and notebooks to show what war reporting actually requires of the people doing it.
