Louis Theroux heads to Los Angeles to find out why so many people there are willing to go under the knife for a different face or body. He sits in on consultations with plastic surgeons pitching breast enhancements, tummy tucks, and even muscle implants for men who want a six-pack without doing the sit-ups, and he asks the patients the questions that hover unspoken in every waiting room: does this actually make you happier, and where does it stop? Theroux's approach is the same gentle, deadpan curiosity he brings everywhere, letting surgeons describe procedures in clinical detail while he keeps a straight face that says more than commentary would. He talks to people mid-recovery, bandaged and swollen, and to repeat customers who have made surgery a hobby. The film treats Los Angeles less as an oddity than as a place where an ordinary American anxiety about appearance has simply been given the money and the surgeons to go as far as it wants.
