Understanding the Oracle
Govind Menon, a mathematician at the Institute for Advanced Study, asks what happens to mathematical thought once machines can match or outpace it. He traces the question back to the first computers of the 1940s, when researchers already wondered whether machine calculation and human reasoning were fundamentally different activities. The recent leap in AI capability, he argues, has narrowed that gap further and forces a harder look at what mathematicians actually mean by intuition, creativity, and understanding when they describe how an idea arrives. Rather than treating AI as a tool that merely speeds up existing methods, Menon treats it as a provocation to reexamine the cognitive process of doing mathematics itself. The talk weighs historical perspectives on mathematical discovery against the behavior of modern AI systems, probing whether an oracle that produces correct answers without visible reasoning can be said to understand anything at all.
