Frontline's second installment traces what happened after Edward Snowden's leaks forced Silicon Valley into the open. It follows the fight inside Yahoo, where lawyers challenged a secret NSA order to hand over user data and lost in a court that operates almost entirely outside public view. Interviews with former government officials, journalists, and engineers lay out how companies like Google, Microsoft, and Facebook found themselves compelled to cooperate with programs such as PRISM while publicly insisting their users' data was safe. The film shows executives scrambling to reassure customers and encrypt their own networks against the very agency they had been supplying, and it tracks the political fallout in Washington as lawmakers debate reining in surveillance they had barely known existed. Rather than treating Snowden as the whole story, this half looks at the companies caught between government demands and public trust, and asks how much of the internet's infrastructure had quietly become an extension of the NSA's reach.
