Up There

2012 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

High above Manhattan's streets, a handful of sign painters still climb scaffolding and hang from ropes to paint advertisements by hand, the same way it was done before digital printing took over. Up There follows these painters through their workdays, mixing paint on site, gridding out letters by eye, and covering building-sized walls with brushes instead of vinyl wraps. The film treats the work as both physical craft and vanishing trade, showing what it takes to keep proportions and color right on a surface the size of a billboard when you are standing on a narrow plank hundreds of feet up. Interviews with the painters themselves carry the story, tracing how a once-common profession shrank as machines took over the job, and what keeps a small crew doing it anyway. The camera spends real time at height, looking down at traffic and across rooftops, which gives the film its clearest argument for the work: nobody would do this without caring about it.
