Vermeer: Master of Light

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Johannes Vermeer left behind fewer than forty known paintings, and this film builds its portrait of the artist almost entirely from what those canvases can tell us, since almost no personal records survive. Narrated by Meryl Streep, it moves through works like Girl with a Pearl Earring and View of Delft, using close examination of brushwork, light, and composition to reconstruct how a largely undocumented painter in seventeenth-century Delft achieved effects that still puzzle art historians. Scholars and conservators discuss his use of the camera obscura, his handling of pigment, and the domestic interiors that make up most of his surviving output. The film treats the paintings themselves as the primary evidence, framing each one on screen long enough to study the details that curators point to. Rather than a conventional biography, it is an attempt to read a life through brushstrokes, since Vermeer left almost nothing else behind. The result stays close to the canvases and lets Streep's narration connect the technical observations into a coherent account of the work.
