Vito Acconci has been making work that resists easy categories since 1965, moving from performance and installation art into architecture and design without ever settling into one label. This VICE profile follows him as he talks about that shift, from body-based performance pieces in the 1960s and 70s to the experimental structures and public spaces he designs now, blurring the line between sculpture and building. He talks through the logic behind treating architecture as another kind of performance, something meant to be used and moved through rather than just looked at, and the interview stays close to his own account of the work rather than bringing in outside critics or historians. The piece is short and direct, functioning mostly as a window into how one restless artist thinks about the built environment after four decades of refusing to stop reinventing his own practice.
