Wernher von Braun built rockets for Hitler before he built them for NASA, and this History Hit documentary follows that uncomfortable line from Peenemunde's V2 program to the Saturn V. The film sets his career against that of Sergei Korolev, the Soviet chief designer who spent years in a Gulag camp before running the USSR's rocket program in secret, his identity classified even inside his own country. Archival footage and expert interviews track the Cold War chain reaction: the shock of Sputnik, a string of humiliating American launch failures, and the eventual triumph of Apollo 11 in 1969. The documentary does not let the space race stand apart from the war that produced its engineers, spending real time on von Braun's use of forced labor at the underground Mittelwerk factory and what that history means for how he is remembered. The result is less a celebration of the Moon landing than an account of what both superpowers were willing to overlook to get there.
