Nearly a billion people go hungry while the world already grows enough food to feed twelve billion, and Erwin Wagenhofer's film sets out to explain the gap. The camera follows the food chain across France, Spain, Romania, Switzerland, Brazil, and Austria, watching industrial trawlers dump unsellable fish back into the sea off Brittany, Romanian farmers priced out by subsidized European imports, and Brazilian soy operations feeding European livestock instead of local mouths. Interviews range from corporate executives at some of the world's largest food companies to the fishermen, farmers, and livestock growers who actually work the supply chain, plus the UN's Jean Ziegler speaking on the politics of hunger. No narrator interprets the footage; the juxtapositions do that work, cutting between boardrooms and slaughterhouses, warehouses of surplus and fields left fallow. The film's argument is structural rather than personal: a food system built around profit and efficiency produces both abundance and scarcity as the same output, often in neighboring countries.
