Arjan Roskam has spent over two decades breeding some of the world's best-known marijuana strains, including White Widow and Super Silver Haze, building his Amsterdam coffee shop into the Green House Seed Company empire and collecting 38 Cannabis Cups along the way. VICE follows Roskam and his team of strain hunters into Colombia, chasing landraces: wild varieties that have stayed genetically pure for decades because they grew isolated from commercial breeding. The crew tracks down Punto Rojo and Limon Verde, crossing military checkpoints in the country's still-contested south before heading north to the Caribbean coast. Along the way the film shows the scale of Colombian cultivation and the risk still built into finding these plants, guerrilla territory included. Roskam's pitch throughout is business as much as botany: as criminalization laws fall around the world, he wants Green House positioned to control the legal seed trade before anyone else gets there. The strain hunt doubles as market research for a market that barely exists yet.
