A small team from the group Compassionate Consumers first approaches Wegmans representatives asking for a dialogue about conditions at the farm, and the film opens with that exchange before showing how the company dismissed them. What follows is footage the investigators shot themselves: hens packed into battery cages too small to let them spread their wings, dead and dying birds left on the cage floors, and the culling of male chicks, tossed alive into a macerator because they can't lay eggs. Director Adam Durand cuts this footage against Wegmans' public statements and interviews with the investigators who filmed it. The film cites a statistic to place Wegmans in context: roughly 98 percent of eggs sold in the United States come from cage operations like this one. The argument is that a company known as an industry leader chose the standard practice anyway.
