George Westinghouse built the machinery of modern industrial life without ever becoming a household name attached to his own face. The film traces his rise from a young engineer who invented the railroad air brake to an industrialist who backed alternating current against Thomas Edison's direct current system, a fight remembered as the battle of the currents that decided how electricity would reach American homes. Nikola Tesla's patents and the power struggle between Tesla, Westinghouse, and Edison get their own stretch of the story, along with Westinghouse's less-remembered ventures into natural gas development and the geared marine turbine engine that reshaped shipping. The film also dwells on his reputation as an employer: across every company he controlled, there was reportedly never a strike, a detail it uses to argue that Westinghouse ran his empire on decency rather than the ruthlessness typical of his Gilded Age peers. The result is a portrait of an inventor whose name survives on appliances and infrastructure while his biography faded from popular memory.
