When the Berlin Wall fell, lawyer Gregor Gysi found himself chairman of a party sitting on billions of marks accumulated over forty years of East German misrule. This film traces what happened to that fortune between the fall of 1989 and German reunification, as SED officials scrambled to move domestic and foreign currency, property, and other assets out of state hands before democratic elections could take them away. Interviews and archival material detail suitcases of cash, multimillion-mark loans handed to party comrades, and a network of front companies used to launder the money abroad. Austrian trustee Rudolfine Steindling emerges as a central figure, managing a company linked to the SED and helping erase the money's trail; international investigators later implicated businesspeople and even an Islamic religious organization in the scheme. The film follows the investigators and journalists who spent years trying to reconstruct where 6 billion marks actually went, and how much of it, decades later, remains unaccounted for.
