Working musicians talk about what it actually costs to stay in the business, in interviews shot alongside behind-the-scenes footage of rehearsals and performances. Director Ralf Schmerberg lets the subjects define their own terms rather than narrating over them, and two ideas keep resurfacing: stubbornness, the refusal to quit or compromise that separates the musicians who keep going from those who drift, and surrender, the moment a performer stops controlling the music and lets it take over. The film treats these as opposite but linked disciplines, both necessary to make anything worth hearing. There is no single narrative arc or breakout success story; instead the film moves between voices making the same case from different angles, that a music career is less a plan than a series of choices about how much you are willing to give up. It stays close to its subjects and their instruments rather than pulling back into industry statistics or history.
