What is Happiness? - Purposes of College Education, Lecture 2
Yale's DeVane Lecture series continues with the second session of Purposes of College Education, a course examining what college is for through Plato's Republic read alongside Aristotle, Confucius, John Stuart Mill, Virginia Woolf, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King. This lecture takes up happiness as a philosophical question, asking how classical and later thinkers define a good life and what role education plays in cultivating it. The course also situates its argument within Yale's own 325 year history, drawing on founding documents to trace how the university's sense of its educational mission has shifted over time. Themes threaded through the session include personal character, participation in community, preparation for citizenship, and the practice of serious conversation about ideas. The lecture is open to the public and part of a series that treats college education itself as a subject worth philosophical scrutiny rather than an assumed good.
