Survivors of Auschwitz-Birkenau describe what daily existence inside the camp actually looked like, from the moment of arrival to the routines that governed who lived and who did not. The film covers the construction of the gas chambers, the Kapo system that put prisoners in charge of other prisoners, and the daily selections that decided life or death on the spot. It also traces lesser-known corners of camp life: the so-called Builder School, the camp orchestras forced to play as columns of prisoners marched to work, and quiet acts of resistance carried out under SS supervision. First-hand testimony carries most of the film, supported by archival photographs and historical detail about how the camp's systems of control were designed and enforced. The result is less a chronology of the Holocaust than a close account of the mechanics of survival inside one specific place, told by people who were there.
