By 1944 Auschwitz-Birkenau had become the most efficient killing site the Nazis ever built, and this History Hit film covers its last year, from the mass deportation of Hungarian Jews to the SS scramble to erase evidence as the Red Army closed in. Survivor testimony anchors the account, alongside footage and photographs tied to specific moments: the selection process on the railway ramp, and the secret images smuggled out by the Sonderkommando documenting the gas chambers and crematoria in operation. The film traces how camp administrators tried to dismantle and conceal the machinery of extermination in the final weeks, and follows the forced evacuation marches, later known as the Death Marches, in which thousands of starving prisoners were driven west ahead of the advancing Soviet army. Rather than treating liberation as a clean ending, the film stays with the chaos and violence of the camp's last months, using witness accounts and archival material to reconstruct what prisoners experienced as the war's end approached without yet arriving for them.
