Before the First World War, military planners had no idea what to do with the airplane. The Wright Brothers had only managed controlled powered flight in 1903, and by the time war broke out in 1914 aircraft were still flimsy, underpowered, and largely untested in combat. This film traces how that changed within a few brutal years, as reconnaissance biplanes built for scouting were adapted to carry machine guns and then bombs, eventually flying missions stretching thousands of miles. Archival photographs, period film, and expert narration walk through the engineering leaps and battlefield pressures that pushed aviation from a novelty into a weapon air forces would build entire strategies around.
