What Would Jesus Buy?

Reverend Billy Talen and his gospel choir, the Church of Stop Shopping, board a bus and cross the country in the weeks before Christmas, preaching against consumerism in shopping malls, big-box stores, and even a Walmart headquarters. Filmed by Rob VanAlkemade and produced by Morgan Spurlock, the documentary follows Billy's revival-style performances as he exorcises cash registers and warns shoppers about a figure he calls the Shopocalypse, while interviews with economists and cultural critics lay out how American household debt and holiday spending had climbed to record levels. The film visits families stretched thin by credit card bills alongside footage of Black Friday crowds trampling into stores at dawn, using Billy's theatrical sermons as a hook for a straightforward argument about debt, advertising, and the erosion of Christmas as anything other than a shopping deadline. It stays funny even as the numbers it cites get bleaker, and it ends without pretending the choir changed anyone's spending habits.
