What's Killing Our Bees

Bee populations across the British countryside are collapsing, and journalist Bill Turnbull, a beekeeper himself, sets out to find out why. He meets researchers testing several suspects at once: shifting weather patterns, agricultural pesticides, and a virus spreading through hives, none of which alone explains losses severe enough to alarm scientists and farmers. The film's most striking scene follows entomologists gluing minute radar transponders onto individual bees, tracking their flight paths to see exactly where foraging trips go wrong and whether bees are failing to return home at all. Turnbull's own hives give him a personal stake in the mystery, and he uses that access to press scientists on how much of the decline comes down to any single cause versus a combination of stresses hitting bees at once. The stakes go beyond honey: bees pollinate a large share of the crops that make it to market, so their disappearance threatens the food chain well past the beehive itself.
